A Few of My Favorite (HITEC) Things

HFTP Connect·29 June 2018
It is hard to believe that HITEC is over. If you had the chance to read my pre-HITEC blog, you might recall that I was fretting about being ready for HITEC. Now that it is over, I cannot believe how fast it went by. HITEC this year was a great show for me — and I am going to imagine for a lot of others as well.

Insight on HFTP's Largest HITEC in History - Content and Reporting from HITEC Houston

HFTP Connect·29 June 2018
Last week HFTP hosted the largest HITEC in the event’s 46-year history. Taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas USA, the over 6,650 attendees had access to four days of industry-specific education in a variety of formats, an exhibit hall featuring over 380 companies, and numerous social events and parties, beginning with the Opening Party presented by Samsung and HFTP at the House of Blues. Just that sentence alone presents an overwhelming summary of activity crammed into four days. Imagine being there and maximizing what you could take-away from such a wide-ranging program. It is difficult to do.

Club & Hotel Controllers Conference 2018: Count me in for 2019!

HFTP Connect·28 June 2018
The Club & Hotel Controllers Conference was my first HFTP event, and I can assure you, it will not be my last! Each person involved in it went above and beyond to make sure everything from registration onward ran smoothly. Staff members and volunteers were welcoming and helpful, and the venue was perfectly signaled so that there was no trouble finding the allocated rooms for the sessions — and believe me, given the size of the George R. Brown Convention Center, this is not an easy feat!

Being a Service Critic is in my DNA

HFTP Connect·28 June 2018
Being in the hospitality industry, we are a little more critical than the rest of the population when we experience issues as a guest at a hotel. At the same time, I believe we can also be exceedingly complimentary when our guest experience goes above and beyond our typical expectations, as we know how much work staff puts in to make a guest’s stay memorable. When issues do arise, it is all about recovery and what staff does or does not do that drives the result in either direction. There were solutions at HITEC that certainly showcased several examples of how we can track and respond to situations with our guests.

Remember HITEC Houston?

HFTP Connect·27 June 2018
Written By Kara Heermans, HITEC Guest Blogger - I hope you have not forgotten the excitement of HITEC® Houston already — but I know how quickly returning to a large inbox and a pile of to-do items can cast aside your intentions for all those good ideas garnered from the conference. While it is tempting to throw a couple new pens in your desk drawer, entertain your kids with the blinking fidget spinners, and let the stack of business cards start to gather dust until HITEC next year… DON’T!

HITEC: Where You Can Learn, Network and Have Fun

HFTP Connect·26 June 2018
It was my first HITEC. I ensure it will not be the ONLY one. I am surprised by how much I learned and gained from attending this event. I am also impressed by how organized this event was, especially considering the size of the conference.

The Realities of a Memorable Guest Experience

HFTP Connect·20 June 2018
HITEC always kicks things off with a lot of energy and this year was no exception! It was lovely to see Samsung coordinate with HFTP this year on the opening event. The shared experience of everyone enjoying themselves at the House of Blues and puttin’ the hands up to Flo Rida fostered a fun moment of togetherness in the industry.

Technology as a Cultural Challenge in the Hospitality Industry

HFTP Connect·20 June 2018
There is one idea that permeates the sessions at the 2018 Club and Hotel Controllers Conference, and it is that technology is ingrained in people’s lives. Be it the tech-savvy millennials or the digital native Gen Z, the way in which individuals interact with each other and their environment is being continuously transformed by the evolution of AI.

HITEC 2018 Hidden Treasures

HFTP Connect·20 June 2018
By Jennifer Jones, Guest Blogger - In the sea of exhibitors, it’s tough to get through the entire exhibit hall every year. In addition, there are general sessions to attend, Tech Talks to listen to and educational forums to sit in. How can one possibly get through it all? Allow me to be your personal concierge to point out a few hidden treasures I found on the showroom floor. These are a fraction of what you can find along those aisles, so take my suggestions and continue to do your own explorations. There is one last day left to find those hidden gems.

For Everything, There is a Season

HFTP Connect·20 June 2018
By James Lingle, Guest Blogger - I had to make a choice this morning. I had to choose between two sessions that I wanted to attend that were happening at the same time. Both were interesting, but until I can clone myself, I had to pick one. I decided on Blockchain – primarily because I know the least about it (after all, they are educational sessions!).

A European Vacation of 'Pay at the Table'

HFTP Connect·14 June 2018
By Jennifer Jones, official guest blogger for HITEC Houston 2018 - I recently took an 11-day vacation to Europe and spent some time in Paris and various cities around Portugal. It was lovely! I toured the vineyards in the Douro Valley outside Porto, hiked the elusive Green Cauldon on Madeira Island, paddled around the grottos in Lagos and sipped a lot of rosé at Parisian brasseries while it poured rain. While my adventures were varied, and most made me feel better about the pounds of pastries I devoured, I noticed a similar pattern every time I went to settle a check. Not one person ever touched my credit card at a bar or restaurant!

Countdown to Opportunity: The Club & Hotel Controllers Conference 2018

HFTP Connect·14 June 2018
Written By: Laura Resco, official event guest blogger for the HFTP Club and Hotel Controllers Conference 2018 - One of the most important jobs of a graduate student is to produce original research that furthers the existing knowledge within an industry. Unfortunately, that is not an easy task. In the first place, one must find a topic that is not only academically interesting but also relevant to professionals. Moreover, there is always the hurdle of data availability. Finally, the result of the research should be a feasible solution to a current problem. In light of this, how can students keep up with such a dynamic industry as hospitality?

My HITEC To-Do List (and Maybe Something for You, Too!)

HFTP Connect·12 June 2018
I cannot count the number of times I have come to the realization that it is now time for something that I am not completely sure I am ready for. I feel that way about HITEC this year. Not that I’m not ready for HITEC – I’m just not ready for HITEC! Every year, as part of my plan to make the most of HITEC, I take the time to look through the educational programs and the show floor listing to find things that are on my “must” list.
